|自己紹介||Hello everyone! My name is Tom and I turned 40 this year (shhh – don’t tell anyone, just kidding, life really does begin at 40!). I stay in the most beautiful Cape Town, South Africa. Let me tell you a little bit of how I became an online teacher.
I finished high school in 1996 and decided to go and travel before doing my degree at university. I travelled through Europe, including the UK and the USA extensively for two years, while working. I then came back a more rounded and wiser human being, being 18 when I left; I thought I knew it all already, of course! I started a B.Accounting degree at the University of Stellenbosch in 1999, quickly realising that becoming a Chartered Accountant was no longer my dream, I scrambled to try and figure out what now. In 2000 I switched to a B.Comm in Business Management and Industrial Psychology, which at the time seemed to open up more possibilities. I completed my degree at the end of 2002. I then decided another year “off” is in order as I worked so hard in achieving this degree, that I deserved it, naturally. I entered the work force in Camps Bay, Cape Town, one of the most spectacular beaches in South Africa. I became a waiter, as this would give me the freedom to manage my own time, while I did not take on much responsibility. Oh dear, I can tell you with confidence from my own personal experience the saying is true: “You don’t choose the hospitality industry, it choses you!” I ended up in management in 2006, yes it took me over three years to take the leap and take on the extra responsibility, and I am not shy to admit it. I quickly worked my way up from assistant manager, to manager, to general manager of the restaurant. In 2007 we opened a second and subsequently we opened 11 more. I fulfilled various roles from Admin Manager, Area Manager, and Back of House Manager to finally settling in as the Food & Beverage Manager until August 2018!
I made a commitment to be out of the industry by 30, which did not happen, as you can clearly see from the above story. I then made a new commitment to be out by 40! Did I make it? Yes, as I turned 40 in September I made it with a month and a few days spare. Here is what happened:
I decided to start studying into a new direction, Psychology in 2013. I finished Psychology first year to third year, part time, in two years. I then enrolled for my Honours, which I completed Cum Laude in 2017! This journey brought me to an organisation called Help2Read. We volunteered our time to assist children that were struggling with their reading to help them catch up and build their confidence. It sparked my interest for teaching and education! I decided to take this further and started teaching online from the beginning of 2018. I started by teaching juniors and adults simultaneously. The experience has been phenomenal! The feedback I received from students was so rewarding, after being in an industry that is so ungrateful for so long, this was absolutely delightful!
Now that you know how I ended up here let me tell you briefly of my hobbies and interests. I absolutely love travelling and have subsequent to my Europe and US trips, started exploring South East Asia. I adore meeting and exploring new cultures. I can finally read again, as with my previous job I was always too tired. I frequent the theatre when I get an opportunity. I love series and movies on Netflix. I enjoy the beauty of Cape Town with frequent walks and day trips, when the weather allows.
I can provide you with lessons on so many topics and will custom make lessons for you if you would like that. I can help you with basic vocabulary, using topics like: Colours, around the house, travel time, fashion, animals, etc. If you are more advanced let me know what you’d like to learn and I can create a lesson for you. If you’d like to focus on conversational English I can assist you with that too with some role plays. I have studied and worked in business for many years, so business English is no problem for me. We can focus on grammar, pronunciation or speaking. I am patient and therefor consider myself equipped to teach from beginner level to advanced levels.
I am here for you, so let me know how I can help! I will see you in class soon.
